TRANSFORM BRIEFS UK PRIME MINISTER BROWN

24 July 2007

Dear Colleagues

I met last week with our Prime Minister Gordon Brown, to request that the UK Government conduct an independent Impact Assessment of domestic UK drug legislation and our wider commitment to prohibition.

Part of the idea behind the call is to reduce the polarisation we have reached in the historical discussion, classically described as a debate between ‘legalisation and prohibition’. Our approach could enable stakeholders to agree on a way forward that is evidence based, especially for politicians who treat drugs as a taboo area.

I have attached the briefing that I gave the PM. He said he would consider the request.

I offer this in the spirit of partnership, as a way forward for all of us who wish to see a humane and effective response to drugs.

See our blog with the press release
